“Doing everything yourself” has become an option in many states with the advent of approved self-help forms. For example, the state of Florida has produced a complete set of Family Law Self-Help forms. These forms have been carefully reviewed by the state Bar association and subsequently approved by the Florida Supreme Court. Each form is accompanied by instructions on proper use. Because Florida Statutes reference those self-help forms, they are accepted by all Florida courts. Many if not all states have adopted some type of self-help forms. You can usually download the forms from your state court website or purchase an inexpensive pack of forms at your local courthouse. The advantage: the forms are free and you do not need a lawyer to file them. The disadvantage: the instructions can be confusing, complex, and difficult to follow. And you may be sacrificing some serious legal rights without realizing you are doing so.

Spending the day or weekend on your boat is one of the pleasures most boaters look forward to all the time. Unfortunately, the marinas where vessels are stored at are just as susceptible to crime as our homes and places of work, if not more so. Criminals prey on two facts. (1) Many boats are left alone for days and weeks at a time and (2) when a boater heads out onto the water, criminals know that they have more than enough time to burglarize their parked car.

With that being said, it becomes important for boat owners to learn some common-sense practices for keeping the property on their boats and in their vehicles as safe as possible. Listed below are five steps that boaters can take to help protect their property from crime.

1. Mark It
This is a proven deterrent and you will have a better chance of having your property returned if it is stolen. Etch or engrave an identification number, such as you vessel ID number, onto all of your valuable items. This will enable authorities to trace lost or stolen items back to your vessel. Also, enroll in a crime prevention program, like Boat Watch USA. It is free, and you receive a Vessel ID decal which includes a warning for all would be perpetrators to avoid your vessel. Place this decal where it can be easily seen from the most common spot your vessel is boarded from. 2. Record It
Secondly, record in detail all of your valuable equipment. Compile a written inventory of your boat, trailer, and all onboard equipment. 3. Photograph It

Include photographs of open drawers and lockers with all contents revealed. Date and sign the photographs and add clarifying or identifying messages as necessary. Store these photographs or video tapes in a safe location outside of your boat, such as your home.

4. Secure It
Most thieves are opportunists and seek out the easiest vessels to strike. Purchase and use quality locking devices for your boat to make entry and accessibility as difficult as possible for would be thieves. Also, remove as many items as feasible when you are going to leave your boat unattended. The best way to keep thieves from stealing property from your boat is to not leave it aboard. Remove high risk items like TV’s, radios, and CB’s. If you are not going to remove items, store them out of sight in a securely locked cabinet or locker. Lastly, you may consider having an alarm system installed on your vessel. Care should be taken to select security equipment that is resistant to environmental elements typically found near waterways.

5. Marina Security
Many thieves are successful because they look as if they belong in the area. Become acquainted with your fellow neighbors at the marina. A tactful offer to help assist a stranger to find a person or a boat will signal to thieves that you are looking out for each other and that nobody goes unnoticed. Urge your fellow neighbors to also be observant of strangers in the area and to question their presence as well.

Be sure to always lock your vehicle when parked at a launch site, marina or dock. Remember to keep all windows secured and to remove any valuables from sight. If you are not taking your purse, cell phone, or other property with you, lock it in the trunk while you are gone. Also, to lessen the opportunity a would-be-thief has to break into your vehicle, park it in an open, visible area.

Be mindful and alert of any suspicious vehicles or persons who are lingering in the area. Record license plate numbers and remember physical descriptions of these vehicles and persons you observe loitering in the area.

Remember, a marina with good security equipment and good security practices is a good start. Having marina members who actively carry out these five steps can make the difference between crime prevention and criminal activity.

He won $30 million dollars at cards and lost that much and more. He is the only three-time winner of the World Series of Poker. He died broke and alone in a sleazy porn motel between The Strip and Downtown Las Vegas.

Stuey “The Kid” Ungar was proud of the fact that Mafia bosses came to his Bar Mitzah. The son of a New York bookmaker who died in the arms of one of his many mistresses, he blew his inheritance within a couple of weeks on the ponies.

Stu Ungar may have been the best card player of all time. He would learn a game and master it in record time. At 16 he was the world’s best gin rummy player. He dropped out of high school to play full-time.

Not content to simply win a game, he had to win big. He abused his opponents along the way. Soon no one would play against him.

Purportedly staked by the New York mob, he split for California when he gambled away what he owed them. They followed, told him what he had to do to be free of them, and paid an entry fee into a Vegas Gin Rummy tournament. Stuey won $50,000, paid them off, and stayed in Vegas.

With a photographic memory for cards, he turned to blackjack. If half a deck had been dealt, he could read out which cards were left. He became a “card counter” – and casinos don’t like blackjack card counters – and he was soon barred from playing. He then turned to poker.

After having played poker’s premier game, Texas Hold ‘em, for only a few months, he captured top prize in the 1980 World Series of Poker. He did it again in ‘81. When asked what he would do with the $375,000 prize money, he mumbled, “Lose it.” And he did.

Stuey was a card savant. Small and slight – hence the nickname “The Kid” – he knew cards and almost nothing else. He thought bank accounts were stupid because you couldn’t access your money at midnight if you needed it as he often did. When it was time to buy a house, the realtor met him at the poker table and he slid over the down payment in cash. He would buy Jaguars and Cadillacs, bang them up, and forget to change the oil.

After winning the 1981 World Series he was invited onto the Merv Griffin TV show. He received a $300 check for his first appearance and a second check for $100 when the show was re-run. “This was the only legitimate money I ever earned,” Ungar said.

He would win enormous sums at the poker table, then sprint to the casino sports book and lose it on baseball, football, or horse racing. He was never hesitant to borrow money, as he often did, because he knew (and his debtors knew, too) that he would win it back at poker.

He took to golf. On his first outing he lost $80,000 on the putting green and never made it to the first tee.

He married, had a child (Stefanie), divorced and fell into a downward spiral, fueled by cocaine. But as the candle flickers just before going out, so it was with Stuey.

In 1997, in bad shape, he returned to the World Series of Poker. He wore blue sunglasses low on his nose because a part of it had collapsed from drug abuse. He pulled himself together just long enough to became the only person ever to win the World Series of Poker three times in competition. It is unlikely that this record will ever be broken.

When he was found in the Oasis Motel in Las Vegas, a porn movie was on the TV. He had $800 dollars in his pocket, what was left of a $2000 loan a few days before. His poker buddies took up a collection to pay for his funeral.

One movie, “High Roller,” has been made of his life and another is in the works, based on the book, “One of a Kind,” by Dalla and Alson. His friends, and he had many, are looking forward to a lasting memorial to whom Dalla and Alson call “the world’s greatest poker player.”
